UAE Residence Visa After 180 Days Abroad: How to Return

A standard UAE residence visa generally loses validity after more than 180 continuous days outside the country. Specific exceptions apply, while the ICP and Dubai GDRFA routes, fees, documents and deadlines address people who have already exceeded six months abroad.

First check: do not travel until you know the visa status

The general rule is that a standard UAE residence visa may be invalidated after more than 180 continuous days outside the country. Before booking a flight, check the immigration record rather than relying only on the expiry date printed in an old visa PDF or Emirates ID.

  • Count the continuous absence from the date you last exited the UAE.
  • Check whether the residence is still active, cancelled or expired and confirm how many days of validity remain.
  • Identify the issuing authority: Dubai-issued residence files use GDRFA Dubai; the other six Emirates use ICP.
  • Ask the sponsor, employer or free-zone authority whether the immigration file is still active. A return permit does not restore a residence that the sponsor has cancelled.

How to check your residence visa by passport details

Use ICP File Validity to check a UAE residence visa by passport details. Enter the requested information and review the status and expiry date shown in the immigration record.

  • Open ICP File Validity, choose the passport-information search and complete the requested fields.
  • The residence is no longer valid if the official checker shows Expired or Cancelled, or if the recorded expiry date has passed. Contact the sponsor and the responsible authority before travelling.
  • Important: Valid or Active status does not override the 180-day absence rule. Count the continuous period from your last exit from the UAE. After more than 180 days abroad, a standard residence holder may still need a return permit even while the portal shows an unexpired visa.
  • Without the required permit, the airline may refuse boarding or UAE immigration may refuse entry. This can mean buying a return ticket at your own expense.
  • Do not rely on resolving the issue after arrival. Assistance in the airport immigration area is not a guaranteed application route. ICP gives a two-day processing time, approximately 48 hours, for its electronic service submitted from outside the UAE; this is not a guaranteed airport decision time.

Which portal to use: ICP or Smart GDRFA Dubai

Use the authority that issued the residence file, not the airport where you plan to land. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah applications go through ICP. A Dubai-issued residence goes through GDRFA Dubai, even if the holder plans to arrive through another Emirate.

Smart GDRFA Dubai: step-by-step application

For a Dubai-issued residence, the federal ICP service does not apply. Use Smart GDRFA Dubai. If you have a one-year Nomad Visa (Virtual Worker), you must apply yourself by following these instructions because you do not have a sponsor. If you have an employment visa, ask your sponsor, employer, free zone or an authorised Amer centre to submit the return application.

  1. Open https://smart.gdrfad.gov.ae/en/, press Login and authorise through UAE Pass.
  2. On the New Application screen, choose For Myself and select the active Resident file. For a dependent, use the corresponding dependent option.
  3. In Services, select “Return Permit for Resident outside UAE More than 6 months”, as highlighted in the screenshot below.
  4. Confirm the Unified Number, Dubai residence file, passport, sponsor and contact details shown by the system.
  5. State the absence reason and dates, then upload the passport, residence and supporting evidence requested for the case.
  6. Pay the amount calculated for the immigration file and save the transaction and application numbers.
  7. Monitor the application online. If GDRFA requests an amendment, upload the corrected document through the same request rather than starting a duplicate application.
  8. Download the approved permit and verify the last permitted entry date and the remaining residence validity.

After UAE Pass authorisation, select the active resident file and choose the highlighted return-permit service. The live portal layout may change.

ICP Smart Services: step-by-step application

For a residence issued outside Dubai, open the official ICP service “Issuance of a Permit to Stay Outside the Country for More Than 6 Months”. The application must be submitted while the applicant is outside the UAE and only after completing 180 days abroad.

  1. Open the ICP service page and select Start Service, or use the UAEICP mobile application.
  2. Sign in with UAE Pass or the account method offered by the portal. If the residence is establishment-sponsored, the establishment may also submit the request.
  3. Review the retrieved passport, Emirates ID, residence, sponsor and contact details. Correct any field the system allows before continuing.
  4. Enter the reason for remaining abroad for more than 180 days and the relevant dates. Keep the explanation short, factual and consistent with the evidence.
  5. Upload the requested evidence. The official service specifically requires proof of the reason for staying outside the UAE for more than six months.
  6. Review the fee calculation, pay online and save the application or request number.
  7. Track the request in ICP Smart Services. After approval, download the permit PDF and check its entry deadline.

The ICP service is titled “Issuance of a Permit to Stay Outside the Country for More Than 6 Months”, includes Start Service and gives a two-day completion duration. Interface details may change.

Documents to prepare before opening the application

The portal decides the final document list from the immigration file and the reason you enter. Prepare clear colour scans in advance; cropped, blurred or contradictory evidence can delay review.

  • Passport bio page and, if requested, the page showing the latest UAE exit or relevant travel stamps.
  • Current residence visa or digital residence file and Emirates ID, front and back.
  • A signed explanation letter with the absence dates, reason and intended return date.
  • Evidence matching the reason: medical reports, study confirmation, employer letter, travel restrictions, family emergency records or other relevant proof.
  • Sponsor or establishment documents if requested, plus active email and mobile details for notifications.

ICP fees, processing time and entry deadline

Under the ICP service terms, the fee is AED 100 for each month of delay after six months plus an additional AED 100 Smart Services fee. A fraction of a 30-day period is charged as a full period. The nominal completion duration is two days, but extra documents or verification can extend the practical timeline.

  • At least 31 days of residence validity must remain when an ICP application is submitted.
  • After ICP approval, entry must be completed within 30 days including the approval date.
  • For Dubai, Smart GDRFA calculates the payable amount and permit validity from the individual immigration file. Treat the amount displayed before payment and the date on the issued permit as final.

After approval: what to carry and what to check

Do not travel on the payment receipt alone. Wait for the approved electronic permit and verify that the passport number, name, residence file and entry deadline are correct.

  • Keep the permit PDF available offline and carry a printed copy.
  • Carry the passport used in the application, Emirates ID and a copy of the residence record.
  • Confirm with the airline before departure that the permit is accepted for check-in; airline staff may need time to verify it.
  • Enter before the deadline shown on the approval. Approval does not extend an expiring residence beyond its recorded validity.

If the service is unavailable, the request is rejected or the visa expired

Do not submit repeated applications with different explanations. First identify the reason shown in the portal and ask the responsible authority or sponsor which correction is required.

  • If the residence was cancelled, the sponsor normally needs to arrange a new entry and residence process; a return permit cannot reactivate a cancelled file.
  • If fewer than 31 days remain on a non-Dubai residence, the ICP condition is not met. Contact ICP and the sponsor about renewal or a new entry permit.
  • If the portal cannot retrieve the file, verify the passport number, Unified Number, issuing Emirate and whether the sponsor has changed or cancelled the record.
  • Do not arrive on a tourist visa assuming the old residence will automatically return. Clarify the immigration route before travel.

Exceptions: confirm the category before applying

Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and the husband of a UAE national woman when sponsored by her are exempt from this procedure while the residence remains valid. Other exceptions cover specific medical, study, public-sector, diplomatic, domestic-worker and other cases. Categories and evidence differ by authority, so do not assume an exception from the job title alone.
